Safe room guidelines for channel owners and ops

Users that join safe (G-rated) and featured channels are often young people or individuals that want to chat in a safe environment. They also can be users that are new and don't know anything about netiquette or how things work in Filetopia.

When a user joins a safe channel, it is important that they are treated with patience.  If, for example,  they swear, the user should be told in a civil manner that swearing is not allowed in safe channels.

If a user continues to swear or engage in behaviour not suitable for a safe room, they can be gagged.  If the behaviour persists, they can then be kicked from the room or banned.

Filetopia is a community of people from all over the world; as such not everyone will speak English. A simple solution for this is the use of a translation site or ask if someone is present in the room who speaks the language so the user can be spoken to, if needed. You should never kick someone for not speaking or understanding Under no circumstances should you kick someone for not speaking or understanding a certain language.

If a user shares pornography or other offensive material, they should be asked nicely to remove it, and then they can be helped with making a  new porn-free list. If they are not there or do not respond when messaged or sound alerted, they can be kicked from the channel. Most of the time, however, new users don't know that porn is not allowed in G-rated channels and are willing to remove it without incident.

In G-rated channels sharing is not required as some users are children or people who use the program at work, school or in other situations where it's not possible to share files. If  a user is downloading from you and not sharing files in return, you may ban them at the file server level.  However, while a user may ban someone from their file server for not sharing files in return, operators and owners of G-rated channels should never kick a user from their room for not having a list or sharing files.

If a user starts to make a few sounds, try to explain him/her in a nice way that it can disturb the chat, but don't kick the person instantly. Often a user is new and just testing out the options. Also an option is to delete your sounds from your sound directory or just disable them in options.

Kicks/bans on request or Kicks/bans because of things that have happened in another channel and dragging fights from other channels over to any other G-rated channel are never tolerated.

If you have a problem with any of these guidelines and cannot reinforce them then your channel is not suitable of being a G-rated channel. Therefore you should not have a G-rating and should be behind the parental lock as it's not a safe and peaceful environment for minors.

Note: Ops and owners of G-rated channels should never abuse their power as an op or owner by kicking instantly but always give the user the opportunity to correct themselves.
