Curious about the "calculate checksum for files"?  It is a function that creates a number unique for a particular file, on the file server hosting the file.  Lists take a lot longer to render if this option is used as it will need to open and process every single file in your list to calculate the checksum, but this function can be useful to some.  The advantages of using checksums include:

  • If a file is downloaded from a list that has checksums, once the file is finished the program will calculate its checksum and compare it with the one in the list,  making sure the file arrived correctly and is in it's original form.  If the file does not arrive as intended, the user will be notified that the file is corrupt.
  • Finding duplicates in the list:  You can activate this option in the list's actions menu.  It will analyze your list and if any duplicates are found, it will create a new list with all those duplicates with pointers to your list for both the original and duplicated files.  This enables you to easily decide which one to keep.
  • Comparing 2 lists:  You may want to compare the contents of one list with another.   This feature is available in the list's actions menu.

File categories

This function allows you to group files according to their extension.  By default, Filetopia uses six categories that hold the most popular file types:  Audio, Video, Image, Compressed, Docs&Info, Software.

You can customize these completely by adding new categories, editing the existing extensions or deleting existing ones.

These categories are used to filter files when you open a files list or in search result windows.
