What's new
Filetopia Classic, which stared in 1998, was already a quite complete file sharing and Instant Messenger application when development stopped in 2002.
This new Filetopia FX version is a complete rewrite using modern technologies which improves upon the Classic version in the following areas:
The maximum file size limit of 2Gb has been removed.
Graphic chat has been vastly improved. There are tens of configurable chat presets, hundreds of emoticons and users have the ability to add new ones and capture those they like from the chat. You also have the ability to post images and HTML fragments (which are filtered for security purposes). Lastly, we've made improvements to all existing chat features.
Messages use the same technology behind the chat and can take advantage of all its graphic features.
Room Walls are now all graphic and have comments, votes, moderation and are able to notify admins and subscribers of changes.
The log is now a graphic one that is kept encrypted for security purposes. In addition, logs now have a powerful search feature to enable users to quickly find what they are looking for.
File sharing protocols have been completely rewritten.. They now allow much higher transfer speeds and better performance, and transfers feature a speed graph to track your download/upload.
Preferences have been made more user-friendly, including having its own tab so you can keep it open while trying new chat themes. All basic preferences are just 1 click away.
The User Interface is the main visible difference in Filetopia FX. Improvements include more than 10 new themes that completely change the look of the program, draggable tabs, floating windows, a sidebar for easy access to contacts, messages, and lists, multi-monitor support and more.
Moderation tools have been improved to help room owners, moderators and helpers maintain a safe and fun community for all users.
Network protocols have been updated to improve speeds and increase capacity. P2P protocols are more reliable and able to function without the need of the Filetopia Network for many functions, including file sharing. You can now even host your own room outside the network!
Some other changes we've made
Rooms do not open automatically: In this version, only room admins (operators) can open a room, which will display an Open icon next to it in the room list. If the room is closed and you are not an operator, the program will open the room's associated wall automatically. This way we prevent unmoderated rooms from staying open. Also, a moderator can Close a Room if they want, so when they leave the room does not stay open unmoderated.
Each user can create one public room: Instead of having thousands of unattended/unmoderated rooms, we decided to introduce this limitation to steamline the community. If you need to create more rooms, you can contact a system operator and request the limit to be increased. Private rooms, however, do not have this limitations.
Global search is no longer available: To emphasize the community experience, we decided to remove anonymous global search. We believe file sharing should be among communities and friends; it will encourage interaction with other people and go beyond anonymous sharing of files. We want to ensure that users have the chance to get more than files from this experience. However, if files is all you are interested in, searching in large rooms with a lot of sharers will probably help you find what you are looking for.
